Portage High School Create Co-Op for Ice Hockey

New Program Branded as the Portage Muskies Hockey Team

Portage, MI: Beginning in the 2020-2021 high school hockey season, the Portage Northern and Portage Central high school hockey programs will form one high school program for the Portage community. The co-op agreement is for a minimum of two years and will be up for renewal after the 2021-2022 season. The program will be branded as the Portage Muskies Hockey Team. Traditions and elements of both programs will be integrated into the new team. The Muskies will compete in the South Central High School Hockey League and continue its association with MHSAA

Hockey.

The Head Coach for the Muskies will be Drew Moffit, who had been the head coach of the Portage Central program over the last two seasons. Drew is a graduate of Portage Central, playing hockey for the Mustangs under Jim Murray and he helped lead the hockey program to league and regional championships. Coach Moffit has been active in the Kalamazoo Optimist Hockey Association as a player and coach for over 20 years and is currently a member of the KOHA Board. Coach Moffit also currently is a scout in the NAHL for the Jamestown Rebels and in the USHL for the Omaha Lancers. Coach Moffit's staff will include former Huskies Rob Michalka, Cam Michalka and Barry Toornman. Alex

Hufford, a former first-team, all-league goalie for the Mustangs will serve as the goalie coach. Chris Riker, Athletic Director at Portage Northern High School, will step into the primary administrative roll for the Muskies.

Portage Northern and Portage Central are proud members of the Michigan High School Athletic Association, and the schools have over 50 state championships combined.
